What kind of scam is this?

Sounds to me like he was trying to scam you into accepting charges for a craigslist purchase. If you had given the identification code to some person who called you, it might have been seen as a billing confirmation. I don't know for sure since I don't use craigslist, but that's the only thing I can think of that might be used here.
