Possible Gl in my Eye?

I think I may have gotten a small piece of a gl light bulb in my eye. I flushed it out with the shower head, and although my eye doesn't hurt, it is a little irritated and a little red. I went to an optometrist and they put a stain in my eye and then looked at it with a light and said he couldn't see any gl. Would an ophthalmologist do anything different? Or do you think the optometrist was probably correct in believing that my eye is ok? Is it normal for my eye to be a little irritated from flushing it with water?
